Since their inception in 2000, the United Nations Millennium Development Goals have urged the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women as a fundamental component of international development efforts. Yet, while the number of female leaders has grown worldwide, none of the past nine appointments for UN Secretary-General have been women. What implications does this have for gender equality within the institution and globally? Can the United Nations promote women’s rights without adequate female representation? Join the IOP’s International Policy Program to discuss these questions and more with Gillian Sorensen, a former United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Senior Advisor to the United Nations Foundation. This event is off-the-record. Lunch will be provided. About IPP: The International Policy Program (IPP) at the Institute of Politics aims to highlight current events in global affairs. This series gives students the opportunity to invite experts in the Chicago area to discuss current hot-button topics around the world. In the 2015/16 year, the committee hosted seven events on topics ranging from North Korea, human rights, and the world's reactions to Donald Trump's candidacy for president. The committee also organizes a career mentorship series that focuses on international relations and politics.
