For decades, Black and Latino households have faced financial and policy disadvantages that have made them less likely to own a home or in a position to accumulate wealth.
Throughout our nation’s history, Black Americans have been unable to take advantage of opportunities afforded to their white counterparts, such as the Homestead Act, the Social Security Act of 1935, including the G.I. Bill after World War II. Black Americans were prohibited from getting federally backed home loans, known as redlining, leading communities of color to face even more disadvantages. Latinos have long faced discriminatory workplace practices that have seen them disproportionately working in low-pay jobs with fewer benefits.
As a result, the average white household has significantly more wealth than Black and Latino households, creating what’s known as the racial wealth gap, which has myriad ramifications, including higher student loan debts, disinvestments in communities and decreased life expectancy.
What forces continue to prevent marginalized communities from achieving financial equity? Is it possible to remove systemic barriers and create a stronger, more inclusive US economy? Who benefits in a more equitable economy?
