Support for Ukraine has historically enjoyed bipartisan support, especially among veterans, but among Republicans, that has changed. In 2022, 17 percent of Republicans thought the United States was doing too much for Ukraine, a year later that share tripled, and dozens of Republicans say they are opposed to President Joe Biden’s latest request for $24 billion for additional military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine. Recently, Republicans in Congress rebuffed a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. How did this partisan divide emerge and what does it reflect and portend? The latest in our ongoing conversation with veterans in our military/civilian dialogue series.
Featuring former Shreveport mayor and former IOP Pritzker Fellow Adrian Perkins, who served in the US Army, and Center for Renewing America vice president Dan Caldwell, a US Marine Corps veteran.
